MULL AQUACULTURE AND FISHERIES ASSOC. AGM  AND CONFERENCE

All Members and non members welcome  - Tuesday-11th Dec. Craignure Hall  8pm

On Tuesday 11th of Dec. MAFA hold their AGM, and this year we have invited speakers to give some brief presentations which should be of relevance to all who are concerned about our industries and also the wider marine environment.   With the Marine Park firmly “off the agenda”--at least in the life of this Scottish Parliament, concentration should be given to other issues which can have an effect on all those whose livelihoods depend on the sea and coast.  Inshore Fishery Groups (IFGs), the Marine Bill and the Sound of Mull Project are just some of these issues.

The new Sound of Mull Project (SSMEI) which is now up and running is just one such project and the project officers from A/B Council have kindly agreed to give us a presentation of what they hope to achieve.  Mark Steward, the A/B Council Marine Development Officer has also agreed to attend, give a presentation and answer questions.

John Hermse from Mallaig and NW FA has also agreed to come and talk to us about voluntary agreements which are working, particularly in the Western Isles, where it is their preferred method of managing conflicts.  John, who used to be a Fishery Officer, has been working closely on these agreements and we welcome his experience.

Patrick Stewart of the Clyde Fisherman’s Assoc. has also agreed to make a presentation.  With his experience of the Clyde Project (SSMEI) which has been running much longer than the Mull project and also as someone who has helped draw up the Inshore Fishery Group structure, he will bring a wealth of information on how they should both work. Patrick is a well known figure in the fishing world and we are indeed lucky to have him speak.

The AGM itself should not last long and as the speakers will be covering a wide range of marine topics Everyone is most welcome, whether members of MAFA or not.   We are particularly hopeful that our councillors and some community councillors will be present as it is a great chance to learn about the marine issues facing the industries on Mull

Soup and sandwiches will be provided.
